|The purpose of a tensile test is to determine when a specified metal begins to permanently stretch (Yield strength, psi.), fracture (Tensile strength, psi.) and how much elongation takes place in a specified length. All structures are designed based on certain minimum tensile requirements normally specified by the American Society For Testing and Materials (ASTM).
The photo on the right shows two primary types of machined tensile specimens. Aside from machined tensile samples, we have tested in tension binder chains, binder chain hooks, truck tire chains, lighting fixture suspension fixtures, wire rope, weldments, high strength bolts, concrete anchors, all-thread connectors, and, in one extreme case, a railroad car connector.
